Judy Watson

b. 1959 Gulf region, Queensland
Judy Watson is a Waanyi artist based in Brisbane whose multidisciplinary practice explores memory, place and the enduring resonance of ancestral knowledge. Grounded in her matrilineal ties to north west Queensland, she approaches Country as both archive and teacher, often working in direct contact with the land so that surface, pigment and terrain interact. Her paintings, prints, sculpture and video works trace the imprints of lived experience, through markings and subtle traces that suggest presence without literal depiction.

Watson’s research driven projects engage deeply with colonial records and museum holdings, interrogating the histories of removal, classification and display that have shaped Indigenous experience. Through processes of layering, concealment and material translation, she evokes what has been silenced while maintaining cultural sensitivity and respect. In 1997 she co represented Australia at the Venice Biennale. Watson holds degrees from the University of Southern Queensland, the University of Tasmania and Monash University, and her work is held in major public and private collections internationally
