Description
Robin Kankapankatja (1930 – 2013) was born at Walalkara, 65 kilometres south-west of Kaltjiti, in the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands. A senior custodian, or nguraṟitja, for Walalkara, Kankapankatja began painting at Kaltjiti Arts in 2004.
Tjukula Kutjupa, painted in July 2010, brings together multiple sites and Tjukurpa associated with Walalkara and the surrounding Country. Kankapankatja identified many rockholes west of Walalkara. In his account of the painting, the left side depicts Ililya Country and an important women’s
Tjukurpa; below are women’s stories extending towards Port Augusta and two rockholes associated with women’s Tjukurpa at Ukarutju in the west. At the top, he identified another women's story, ‘a long way from Walalkara wali’ – his home Country. Across the painting, Country is densely interconnected: rockholes, ancestral narratives, food sources and living things are held together within a single expansive field.
