Nym Bunduk was a tribal leader and great warrior. In 1935 a Catholic mission was established in Wadeye where Bunduk met revered anthropologist, William Stanner. Over the next fifty years they forged a very strong friendship with Bunduk sharing his knowledge of traditional society, law and culture. Bunduk emerged as a significant and influential Wadeye artist during the 1960s and 70s in response to the broader international interest in bark paintings. Wadeye artists developed their own unique style, combining artistic elements from the Western Desert, Kimberley and Arnhem Land.
