In Conversation | Winmati Roberts + Brian Hallett
We recently welcomed Winmati Roberts, nephew of renowned artist, Lawrence Pennington to our Sydney gallery to speak with Amanda Dent and Brian Hallett, Spinifex Arts Project Studio Managers from 2013-2022.
In this fascinating conversation, they discussed the origins of the Spinifex Art Project – which began in 1997 with a series of large scale men and women’s collaborative paintings which were created as proof of their connection to Country and resulted in the successful Native Title claim of over 55,000 square kilometers of land in 2000.
They also shared insights into Lawrence Pennington’s vital role as both a senior custodian of significant sites of the Spinifex people and the Spinifex Art Project, and his artistic practice which led him to become widely recognised as one of the masters of contemporary desert painting.
This conversation coincided with the exhibition now on view in our Sydney gallery, Lawrence Pennington: The Tall Man.
We hope you enjoy this vide, and invite you to visit the exhibition before it closes on 17 April.
